An Story of Surprising Kindness: When a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor
Back in 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured I would book lodging when I arrived, but upon reaching the city, a major event was in town and all the budget hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could bed down in the terminal – but quickly found the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes 24 hours. Not knowing what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I caught public transport and started wandering near the casino, reasoning I might spend the evening in a place that stayed open through the night. That wouldn’t put me at my peak to succeed at a crucial interview the next morning, but as a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.
The world needs more people who show such kindness.
It seems I seemed confused as a female student noticed me walking aimlessly through downtown and wondered if everything was alright. I explained my predicament and without hesitation she offered I could crash on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where my medical school interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided some food: one filled rolls she had from her evening job. I was able to use a hot shower and a secure location and safe for the evening.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me the significant risk she accepted as a woman allowing a male stranger she’d just met crash at her place. At that time I operated under my own unawareness and not even thinking to the potential danger. As a dad now, it astounds me she offered that help – yet incredibly thankful.
Ultimately, I did not go to the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of generosity. My sincere desire is that life has rewarded her good deed abundantly. We could all use more people like that woman.
