Blasts and Low-Flying Aircraft Witnessed in Venezuelan Capital Caracas

Accounts circulated of numerous explosions and the noise of low-altitude jets in the Venezuelan capital in the early hours of Saturday morning. This event has led to claims from Venezuela's leadership and requests for international action.

Venezuela Blames US of Attack

The incumbent administration has accused the United States of what it calls "foreign aggression," stating that former President Trump reportedly directed strikes against the Latin American nation. In an official statement, the government stated that attacks had targeted the capital and three other regions: Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua.

"The sole aim of these strikes is to seize control of our nation's strategic resources, notably its oil and mineral wealth," the government declared.

Venezuelan officials called on the international community to condemn the actions, which it described a "clear infringement of international norms" that put numerous of civilians in peril.

Accounts of Explosions and Defense Installations Targeted

Residents spoke of feeling approximately multiple explosions around 2 a.m. in the morning. People in several areas allegedly ran into the streets.

"Everything shook. It was horrible. We experienced explosions and jets in the distance," stated one witness.

Smoke was reported rising from two army bases in Caracas: the La Carlota airbase airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna base army base, where president Nicolás Maduro is reported to reside.

Global Reaction

The leader of neighboring Colombia, claimed on social media that "Currently they are striking Venezuela... attacking it with projectiles." He called for an immediate emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

The Colombian government, which recently became a member of the Security Council, stated it would activate operational measures at its border with Venezuela.

Preceding Events

The alleged attacks come after a extended pressure campaign by the United States against the Venezuelan regime. Since August, authorities reported a major naval buildup off the country's northern coast and a number of strikes on vessels accused of narco-trafficking.

The government has announced "the implementation of external disturbance" and commanded all defense protocols to be initiated. It has also called on its supporters to take to the streets and "denounce this imperialist attack."

American officials and the Defense Department did not promptly addressed requests for a statement regarding the reports.
