Coach Emma Coates Leaves the Young Lionesses Post to Assume Command at NWSL's Bay FC
Embarking on a fresh professional challenge, the 34-year-old coach has resigned her post with the England WU23 national team to assume the role of head coach for National Womenâs Soccer League franchise Bay FC.
A New Chapter
Her appointment follows the departure of Albertin Montoya, who was at the helm of the San Jose-based club during its inaugural two seasons in the premier American league. Montoya had revealed in September his intention to resign at the end of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC end up 13th in the league standings.
âMy time with the FA has been incredible my time with the FA,â stated Coates. âThe experience has been formative both on and off the pitch. Now, I feel ready and excited to push myself in a different setting.â
Coaching Pedigree
Since taking charge in 2023, Coates oversaw the England U23s through fixtures including a 1-0 victory over Norway in the European U23 League and a high-scoring loss to the United States. She will be joined to America is her former Lionesses staff member, Gemma Davies, a former Aston Villa manager in the WSL.
Kay Cossington, a former FA womenâs technical director, spoke highly of Coates's credentials: âEmma is not only an excellent coach, but she also has a proven track record of elevating athletes to compete at the highest levels.â
âCoates excels at leading of squads and building ethos and has the tactical philosophy we were seeking,â added Cossington.
Club Context
The California side experienced a rollercoaster start to its NWSL existence, securing a playoff spot and losing in the playoffs in its first year before facing difficulties to a near-bottom placement in 2025.
Gavin Step, Gavin Step, offered thanks to the outgoing coaches: âWe thank Emma and Gemma for their service and extend our best wishes with their next chapter. Emma, with Gemma, has played a pivotal part in bolstering the progression route between the young Lionesses and the first team.â
âTheir work has directly impacted the development of many promising talents who have earned call-ups to senior Lionesses,â he finished.
Lasting Legacy
Since taking over Mo Marley in 2023, Coates presided over the promotion of a number of players to the England senior side, including playmaker Lucia Kendallâwho netted her debut Lionesses goalâand attackers Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones.
An extensive process for their replacements has begun, with the aim to continue the development of the WU23 program in the coming years.
