Ghostface Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Franchise with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a major family reunion. This latest installment marks the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a character you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.
An Unexpected Return for Fallon Characters
Reports have confirmed that a trio of different characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, despite meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Status
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the exact moment he got the news from the original writer.
"I remember the phone call. I recall the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That moment is permanently etched on my psyche," he says. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the years since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he explains. "A part that is now represented in each and every Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the final product. He admits to feeling immense pressure about not wanting to be the one who ruins the popular series.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've certainly seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Run High
While countless dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are in some way still living in a strange shared situation. The possibility of a self-referential narrative, reminiscent of classic horror movies, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
