British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.
UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."
During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The U.N. reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
