The co-founders of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, that co-founded the company with his partner, revealed how he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor as part of a personal series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was barred from addressing publicly.

Longstanding Conflict Between Creators versus Parent Company

The recent announcement intensifies the ongoing disagreement among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

Both founders have asserted how Unilever along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company from "honouring its social mission".

The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Support

Mr. Cohen stated through an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name and additional components.

“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”

This particular fruit has become a symbol of support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.

The new product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally created in 2016 for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".

Management Shifts plus Future Plans

The founder stated how he plans to create other ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by Unilever.

The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years of involvement, citing worries that its independence was compromised after corporate moves to curb its social activism.

At that time, Ben Cohen stated how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence so that it can achieve the social mission, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
