The network's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
